From Rubble Pile to Kitchen Pride
Anyone who knows The Forktree Project knows we’re big believers in the circular economy — finding creative ways to repurpose what already exists. Renovating the old shed has given us plenty of opportunities to put that philosophy into practice, but our latest effort might be the most ambitious (and exciting) yet: kitchen benchtops made from rubble collected on site, bound together with BioEpoxy eco resin.
The idea was born during a volunteer day last year. While sorting through the rubble pile, we found ourselves talking with volunteer and eco-entrepreneur Sean Steed of Change Climate about the possibilities of BioEpoxy. Suddenly, the thought of turning building waste into something beautiful and functional felt irresistible — and the challenge was set.
What followed was a true labour of love. A mix of red brick, cream kiln brick and concrete was selected and transported to a warehouse north of Adelaide, where Sean and Darren from Change Climate crushed, blended and combined the materials with eco resin. Moulds were built, the mixture was poured and left to cure, and once set, the benchtops made their way back to Forktree for installation. Several coats of self-levelling BioEpoxy were then applied to seal and finish the surface, giving it its final shine.
The result is something we’re incredibly proud of. Like everything at Forktree, these benchtops tell a story — of creativity, collaboration and the belief that waste can become something remarkable. A huge thank you to Sean and Darren for taking on this challenging commission. We know these benchtops will spark plenty of curiosity and conversations about sustainable choices for years to come.
