Ecological restoration
Bringing the landscape back to life.
Beginnings
In 2019, The Forktree Project began restoring an extensively cleared and degraded former pastoral property on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, with the goal of returning it to full ecological health.
Since then, more than 30,000 native trees, shrubs, groundcovers and grasses have been planted, with an impressive 90% success rate — and this is only the beginning.

March 2020 May 2026 Planning for Success
Restoration of the 54‑hectare site is guided by a carefully researched planting plan developed by the Forktree team. This plan draws on:
- Knowledge of local endemic species and their ecological relationships
- Evidence from remnant trees showing what once thrived on the property
- Assessment of topography and soil health to match species to place
- Climate modelling to ensure long-term resilience under a changing climate
- Best-practice planting methods to establish thriving vegetation associations
Why We Restore
A restored Forktree site will provide vital habitat for native fauna and sequester tens of thousands of tonnes of CO2 over the life of the project, contributing to climate change mitigation.
Our restoration work also sets the stage for natural processes to rewild the landscape, including the future reintroduction of native animals as ecosystem engineers. The long-term goal is a self-sustaining, fully functioning ecosystem.
With climate change and biodiversity loss accelerating, our work gives nature the head start it needs for rewilding to take hold.
